Sport at Norwood

At Norwood we are fully active in participating in all sports competitions and tournaments organised in the Southport and Formby area. Where possible we will try to send more than one team and encourage involvement of all children.

These competitions are organised between other primary schools and through the North Sefton School Games Organiser based at Stanley High School. There have even been opportunities for some of our teams to compete against other schools in Merseyside at Level 3 Games.

Consequently we have been awarded the Sainsbury's School Games Mark Platinum Mark for the last three years in recognition of our work in promoting PE and Sport.

We run three football teams as well as a girls football team, who take part in Southport Primary School Football Competitions. This means that all children in Year 5 and 6, who are interested and attend practices can represent the school. Over the year there are also opportunites for younger children to take part in football tournaments.

There are two girls netball teams at Norwood, who take part in Southport Primary School netball leagues. Some girls are then asked to attend Southport Netball Club training sessions.

Cross country is extremely popular at Norwood as we have been very successful with our Cross Country teams and individual runners in a number of events in the local area, in Sefton and also for Merseyside over the last few years. Cross Country club begins normally after February half-term with the goal of trying to increase children's running stamina over the few months.

Outside school, children in Year 5 and 6 can compete in the Sefton Cross Country League followed by the Sefton Junior Cross Country Championships in March as well as the Victoria Park Mile Race in May.

However the school Cross Country team competes annually in the Southport and District Primary SchoolsChampionships at Stanley High in May. Teams of 4 run in the different age groups and as well as trying to win individual medals the teams try to score the least number of points as possible. We are delighted that our school team have been the overall champions for the last 3 years. With 2024 being our most recent success.

If your child is interested in getting involved further in cross country, the local club is Southport Waterloo Athletics Club.

In School Competition

All children also take part in intra school events as part of our Sports House Competitions at the end of every half term and in the annual sports days. Our four houses are: Brownlee (Alistair Brownlee); Cockcroft (Hannah Cockcroft); Fleetwood (Tommy Fleetwood) and Johnson-Thompson (Katarina Johnson-Thompson).

Sports day takes place at the end of May and gives opportunities for children to compete in teams in a range of events as well as the sprint races finale, where medals are awarded to the top 3 in each race.

Every week children try to complete the Golden Mile, which is 5 laps of our track and in order to encourage them further, we hold our own annual Cross Country Championships around the field, through the woods and around the playground in front of a passionate and supportive audience of other children. Medals are awarded to the top 3 and certificates for those finishing in the first 10 and for participating.
